To all my car dealer friends, automotive salespeople and sales managers. Folks if you can’t make sense of the $1200 between factory invoice and average price then you can’t even consider yourself a sales person.

I sold a lot of automobiles in my time. You guys have to quit blaming the internet for your gross. Car dealers have been advertising $500 -$2500 below invoice for decades and then bitch when a third party like TRUECar introduces you to a qualified buyer, interested in your product and all you have to do is make sense of $1200 to make a little money.

Demand your people to prospect and you wouldn’t have to pay someone else to for the introduction. But for years you allowed your sales people and sales managers to sit around the showroom floor and wait for customers to come to you. That is how you got in the habit of spending $400–600 per car sold on TV/radio advertising, direct mail campaigns, weekend barbeques and inflatable gorillas. How many toasters and trips have you given away of unqualified buyers over the years?

Train your people how to make sense of $1200 and you wouldn’t give cars away. Train your people how to effectively prospect their friends and family and then follow them up until they buy and you wouldn’t be tempted to pay for qualified introductions at your store.
I know a guy that told me his Uncle was introduced to his store by a 3rd party website. The salesman did NOT know the Uncle was in the market for a car and the Uncle didn’t know the nephew sold cars! What does that cost the dealership?

Car dealers quit allowing your people to blame anyone for their failures. It is not like you to do that. You got where you are because you don’t blame anyone for anything. Auto dealers are some of the best entrepreneurs I have ever met. Allow your employees to blame anyone is just wrong. Sales people have always taken the path of least resistance and will always blame someone else for their failure unless management says it’s not ok. Over the years sales people have blamed the lender, the finance department, the customer, the customer’s wife, the customers’ kids, the economy, the competition, the manufacturer and even other sales people. Sales managers perpetuate this by allowing this to continue rather than training their people how to handle these situations.

The internet isn’t SATAN. So quit blaming and get back to building value, selling and closing deals. And possibly considering investing money in training your people on how to handle the online/3rd party(Nieuweautokopen.nl) website introduction. These are great leads, that should close in less time and be a great source of quality referrals. A little training can go a long way and may be a better investment than losing money on a $43,000 automobile.
